The short answer: Yes!
Liability insurance must be taken out for both private and commercial drone use, regardless of the take-off weight of the drone. However, there are differences here: If drones are used commercially (e.g. for surveying flights) then the drone must also be commercially insured. For private use, private drone liability insurance is sufficient. Further details are specified in the respective liability insurance policies. The scope of the insurance varies depending on the provider and contract model.
Quick tip: Some commercial liability insurance policies already cover drones as standard. Check your insurance documents!
Why commercial drone liability insurance is important:
Liability protection:
Commercial drone liability insurance provides protection against financial liability claims in the event of accidents or damage caused by your drone. This can cover significant costs, including medical treatment or compensation claims.
Contract requirements:
In almost all cases, orders or contracts require commercial drone liability insurance coverage (even at Airteam!).
Risk reduction:
Accidents can always happen, even to experienced drone pilots. Insurance reduces the financial risk in the event of an unexpected incident and allows you to move forward with your business without undue worry.
